The FDS/Mental Health Specialist provides early intervention service when there is a concern regarding the affective or behavioral domain of a young child or an adult family member or caregiver. Requests for this service may come from staff members or family members. Training and background required to provide this service is extensive and comprehensive, with an emphasis on young children's development and family contexts.

Qualifications

The FDS/Mental Health Specialist must have: 1) Knowledge of early childhood development (typical and atypical); 2) Formal education and training in the mental health field with a specialization in young children and their families; 3) Clinical expertise in assessing and intervening in the social/emotional domain of a young child's development using a family systems perspective; 4) The ability to practice in a consultation model using short term, brief interventions and strategies; and 5) Knowledge of the policies and procedures applicable to the IFSP process.

Occupational Therapist

Qualifications

Knowledge/Certification: Requires a Bachelor's of Science degree in occupational therapy with knowledge of sensory integration and neurodevelopmental assessment and treatment approaches for young children. The clinician must also understand the ways in which motor and sensory processing problems impact on social/emotional and cognitive areas and how to treat children with serious emotional disorders. Maryland licensure is required.

Experience: Requires a minimum of one full year of supervised experience in providing occupational therapy services to young children.

Skills and Abilities: The occupational therapist must be competent in diagnostic and treatment procedures for preschoolers and school-aged children. The therapist must be capable of making independent clinical decisions regarding assessment and treatment at the same time acknowledging when a particularly complex case requires either clinical supervision or consultation. The therapist must be able to collaborate on an interdisciplinary team (e.g., share the occupational therapy perspective with other clinicians and to consider and then, as appropriate, to incorporate the findings of other disciplines) in determining a diagnostic understanding and appropriate treatment plan. The therapist must have skills in oral and written presentation of diagnostic findings, progress updates and treatment plans. Independent nature of position requires excellent time management skills. The ability to identify parent concerns and address their needs in the therapeutic process is essential. In addition, the therapist must have skills in identifying the role of occupational therapy in the classroom setting, utilizing both a direct intervention and consultation model. The occupational therapist must keep abreast of advances in the field and regularly share new information with colleagues.

TNP - Teacher Assistant

Qualifications

Has completed 6 semester hours or 90 clock hours or their equivalent of approved early childhood training.

Experience working with preschool children in a CCA licensed setting (preferably children with special needs).

Certification in Infant and Child Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CRR) and First Aid required.

Previous experience working with young children is desired (e.g., camp counselor).

The Teacher Assistant must have the ability to relate positively and sensitively to the TNP children.

Must be able to interact positively with other TNP team members.

Special competence is required in identifying and managing the needs of children of the TNP.
